The number one most useful self-development insight or exercise that I’ve done over my career is getting clear on what I want. Getting clear on my ideal life and career. And knowing what that looks, feels, and sounds like
How can we work towards something if we don’t know what that something is? And when we are faced with small decisions, how can we choose the option that takes us towards our ideal lives if we don’t have indicators of what that looks like? For it is the small, everyday decisions that change our lives.
I have recently discovered a love and talent for interior design. And I think it’s a good analogy for life. Once we have a design board or vision board, then we can orientate the small decisions around building up to our grand design. What is the difference between walking into a beautifully designed house and one that hurts our eyes when we walk into it? Coherence. Each piece of furniture, soft furnishings, wall colour, etc. is part of the overall design and when one piece doesn’t work the whole vision is compromised.
Our careers and lives are similar. Each choice we make is a building block towards our ideal lives.
And saying ‘no’ to those things that don’t fit. Staying focused, clutter-free, and not taking on others’ vision of what they think your life or career should look like. You are a unique talent and it’s this unique vision of the world that will change the world. Your unique combination of skills and experiences that the world needs.
So create your vision for your life and career. Create it around what you truly want. Reach into the depths of your heart and soul and create a vision that resonates with you. A vision that makes your heart sing.
Interestingly, being clear will set you apart from your peers. Most people wander through life following a path without thinking. Setting instead of following a path is a completely different feeling.
So before setting any goals get clear on what you want. Then give it everything you've got, Wonder Woman!
