Create a picture in your mind of a leader. Maybe it’s someone from your organisation. Or someone from a sports team. Or a historical figure. How do you know they are a leader? What about them differentiates them from ‘everyone else’?
Greta Thunberg is ambitious.
Mother Theresa was ambitious. Rosa Parks was ambitious. Marie Curie was ambitious. Michelle Obama is ambitious. They are/were ambitious for the future. Our future. They are/were ambitious in their dreams, in their aspirations, and in their messages. Be the strong, beautiful, determined woman that we need you to be. Be ambitious for solutions. Be ambitious in imagining what’s possible. Be ambitious for our future. Meetings take up a huge amount of work life and yet research shows that most meetings are inefficient and a waste of time. Does your inner voice sometimes turn against you? Maybe you are feeling anxious or nervous, and that little voice inside tells you to stop, you are too far out of your depth, and you can’t do this.
Negative self-talk can be crippling and make us feel terrible. It's something that many people deal with on a daily basis, to some extent or another. So what do you do when you start to feel the negativity creeping in, and the self-doubt takes over? We have some coping strategies here to help you beat your own negative self-talk: We all like to think of ourselves as inherently good. Sometimes we do things that don’t quite achieve that, but we use qualifiers such as 'I'm having a bad day' or 'He/she deserved it’ etc. That way our ego isn’t damaged and we can carry on in the safe knowledge that we’ll act like a good person next time.
You've had the interview for your dream job and you think you did pretty well. That is, until you get the call - ‘Thank you for your application, but you have not been selected’.
The bottom drops out of your world for a few minutes. They don't want me? Why? Do you feel like you are busy all the time, but by the end of the week you are back where you started? ![]() Journaling every day has changed my life. That may seem like a bold statement about something usually thought of as fairly innocuous. But when I think back to before I started journaling - that is writing down my inner thoughts once a day in my journal - I have experienced profound changes physically, emotionally, even spiritually. And doors have opened for me in my personal and professional life.
I sat in the class with tears rolling down my face. My classmate’s story was shocking, moving, and inspiring. In that moment I knew I had to use storytelling more in both my professional and personal life.
Up until that storytelling class at Cambridge University I hadn’t a clue how to tell a good story. However, I’m now armed with some great tips and tricks that I can put to use straight away. Here are my top tips from that class: Daniel Goleman wrote a seminal paper in the Harvard Business Review in 1998 titled ‘What Makes a Leader?’ and argued that the difference between a good leader and a bad leader is emotional intelligence.
