I am taking some challenging courses in the MBA - specifically Corporate Finance and Financial Reporting and Analysis. They are hard! Who said it was a good idea to do an MBA?! Of course, there are some useful things to learn within these courses. For example, in Corporate Finance we’re learning about corporate investment decisions. Cambridge is an international hub for nature conservation. It is home to over ten conservation organisations including the UN Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, Birdlife International, and the Tropical Biology Association - to name a few. It’s an exciting place to work as a conservationist. We are at the forefront of conservation science, we are world leaders in best practice, and we develop the international standards to which the rest of our sector benchmark against. And yet I can clearly see that what we are doing is too little, too late. You know those days in work when everything seems to go wrong - that the rug has been pulled out from under you? That day when a colleague who has been supportive makes a u-turn and puts the blame on you undeservedly and unexpectedly? Or when a boss sends an abrupt email pointing out a mistake you’ve made and exposing your weaknesses? Or when you get that email saying you didn’t get the job or that promotion?
We’ve been there! It’s unsettling, disorientating, and undermining. It can dash your confidence and make you want to retreat into your shell or reach for the pot of ice-cream. We’ve learned some great techniques for dealing with these types of knocks that we’d love to share with you and we know you’ll find helpful. I’ve recently been introduced to decision trees and they are a revelation! A decision tree is a simple way to evaluate your options through incorporating information on probabilities and outcomes. We recently had a question from a Wonder Woman. It was “Hi ladies! Loving your emails :-) I’d like to know how to build my CV while running my company. If I want to return to the job market in a few years, what should I be doing now?”
No matter what role you are doing there is a place for that role on your CV. Whether it’s taking time as a stay-at-home parent or carer, working for yourself, working in a different sector, or travelling the world. We just attended an inspiring event of the Cambridge University MPhil in Conservation Leadership. At the event there were many discussions around what leadership is and how to foster it. It’s certainly something hard to pin down!
Our tuppence worth is it is by stepping out of our comfort zones, stepping up to challenges, and being proud and confident to be our true selves that we become leaders. It isn’t easy. It is much easier to hide under a bushel somewhere, to stay at home watching tv, or to pretend to be somebody else. So our challenge to you today is - what small step can you make to put your head above the parapet? What small action can you undertake to make the world a better place? How can you move a little more towards your North Star? |
