Google has just discovered that the key to good teamwork is being nice. They spent years figuring out that the secret to a good working environment and high performing teams is to be nice. Wow! What an interesting, although obvious in a way, discovery.
We love reading – especially self-help books. Some have been pivotal in helping us in our careers. Others were interesting but life changing. Here are our top picks – each one has fundamentally influenced us in our careers and we highly recommend them.
We all come up against problems at work or at home. You feel like you’re finally making progress when something throws you off track. You lose focus, fall off the wagon and it’s a struggle just to get back up again. Never mind regaining all that lost ground you worked so hard for in the first place. Perhaps you snapped at your boss or procrastinated over a report and now the deadline is horribly close. Maybe you ignored a few important emails and that small problem has turned into a doozy.
A woman’s intuition may just be the most powerful force on earth.
But as scientists, we have been trained to focus on data. Yes, data is essential but it’s not enough. Nadine and I work in international nature conservation. It’s an exciting, stimulating, rewarding sector to work in and we love it. However, in this sector, there’s a strong culture of working long hours, dedicating personal time to being on committees, or writing scientific papers, or other worthwhile (but time-sucking!) endeavours, and travelling. This is not compatible with a good work-life balance. And can often come at the cost of our health and our relationships.
Is there another way? Yes! There is! |
